In over 1800 hours of life, career, and executive coaching, for all that brought someone to coaching initially, I began to see patterns in what people realized they really needed underneath it all. These are the Essential 6.™

We’re more distracted than ever. Consider the seemingly endless dings, pings, IMs, text messages, calls, e-mails, likes you’re likely getting even as you read this. The truth is, we weren’t created to multitask. What could slowing down + creating space do for you? What if you allowed yourself to be a human being rather than a human doing?
Gratitude creates the opening for abundance.
More, more, more. At some point in life, we go on the never-ending pursuit of acceptance, fame, wealth, power, money, love, goods…and it makes us no happier. Smoke and mirrors. Look out into the Universe and say “thank you” for 3 good things in your life each day and watch as more good things come your way.
What consumes your mind controls your life.
Breaking news. Social media buzz. Alerts on your phone of every kind. The next time you find yourself going down a YouTube rabbit hole or in a twitter frenzy, ask yourself what kind of energy you’re tapping into…and whether it’s the kind that will uplift you + inspire you to do better.
Have you ever been in an airplane and noticed, even if it’s storming, the sun is always shining just above the clouds? Sometimes the fog of our circumstance seems too thick to see through, and we can’t see what choices we have. Viktor Frankl famously said, “Everything can be taken…but one thing: to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” The next time you can’t see a way through, stop. Breathe. And ask yourself, “what choices do I have?” followed by “then, what’s my next best step?"

Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor is a neuroanatomist who realized she was having a stroke as it was happening. As her brain fought to recover, she recalled being able to clearly sense the energy different people brought to her room when they would visit.
The energy we put out is the energy we receive.
Maybe you’ve found it difficult to “carry your own weather,” as Stephen Covey famously said, in the middle of interpersonal or team conflict. Remember, every person we encounter can teach us something…and the traits that frustrate us about others might just be traits we need to work on in ourselves.
